Tiffany Smiley: “Patty Murray’s Lack of Commitment to Debates is Undemocratic”

After 31 Days of Debate Dodging from 30-Year Incumbent, Veterans Advocate Reconfirms, Accepts Revised Dates from Washington State Debate Coalition, League of Women Voters

Pasco, WA – In response to another set of formal invitations from the Washington State Debate Coalition and the League of Women Voters of Washington, veterans advocate and U.S. Senate candidate Tiffany Smiley (R-WA) reconfirmed her participation in and accepted dates for those debates, issuing the following statement:

“Patty Murray’s lack of commitment to debates is undemocratic,” said Smiley. “Her refusal to confirm dates to take the debate stage with me – as well as her rejection of joint editorial board interviews with me – shows her contempt for the voters of Washington State. After thirty years in the Senate, Patty Murray has decided that her only path to victory is to slap the democratic process in the face, all after spending millions of dollars on television claiming to be a protector of democracy.”

Exactly one month after Smiley made her original debate proposal, the locations and dates for debates Smiley has accepted an invitation to are:

  • Tri-Cities Region: Week of September 26 – Sponsored by the Tri-City Regional Chamber of Commerce

  • Washington State University: Friday, October 7 – Sponsored by the Seattle City Club’s Washington State Debate Coalition, Aired by Six TV Stations and 3 Radio Stations Statewide

  • Gonzaga University: Sunday, October 23 – Sponsored by League of Women Voters of Washington Education Fund and The Spokesman-Review, Aired by KSPS

  • Seattle University: Tuesday, October 25 – Sponsored by the Seattle City Club’s Washington State Debate Coalition, Aired by Six TV Stations and 3 Radio Stations Statewide

Smiley may consider other debate opportunities beyond what has been accepted and proposed.
