Smiley Statement on Status of VA Caregiver Program
PASCO, WA – Veterans advocate and U.S. Senate candidate Tiffany Smiley (R-WA) issued the following statement regarding the current status of the VA Caregiver Program.
Tiffany Smiley said: “There is no program closer to my heart than the VA Caregiver Program, which is why I have been completely disgusted as the reforms I fought for have been mismanaged time after time.
I met with Patty Murray about caregiver reform, and at that time she spoke on the floor of the Senate about my story. Yet on her watch, the program has been an absolute disaster ever since it was opened!
I know from personal experience and the testimonies of friends how dehumanizing and exhausting the VA caregiver process is. When all of your energies are going toward caring for a loved one with catastrophic injuries you don’t have the strength, emotionally or physically, to fight government bureaucracy as well.
Where is Senator Murray now? Why isn’t she on the Senate floor standing up for our veterans and holding the Veterans Administration to account? Washington veterans need advocates who have the determination and passion to fight for them when they don’t have the energy to fight for themselves.
Senator Murray will send out a press release taking credit for a program, but she is nowhere to be found when there is real work to be done. When I go to D.C. as Washington’s next senator I will fight for our veterans with the same passion and energy that I fought for my husband. I won for Scotty and I will win for them as well.”
