Smiley Statement on President Biden’s Decision to End Title 42
PASCO, WA – Veterans advocate and U.S. Senate candidate Tiffany Smiley (R-WA) issued the following statement regarding the President’s decision to end Title 42.
Tiffany Smiley said: “President Biden’s announcement that he will end Title 42 sets the stage for a huge influx of illegal crossings and a humanitarian disaster at our open, southern border.
I echo the concerns expressed by Senators Hassan, Sinema, Kelly and others: there should be no change to Title 42 until the administration has a comprehensive plan in place that will strengthen the security of our border while also ensuring the safety of our border agents and those attempting to enter the United States.
In the past year, enough fentanyl entered our country through the porous southern border to kill every American four times. Washington state is reeling from the effects as fentanyl-related overdose deaths soar. King County saw a 167% increase in the number of fentanyl-involved deaths from 2018-2020. Meanwhile, OD deaths in Spokane County nearly doubled in 2021 over 2020 while fentanyl seizures were up 1,098%.
Additionally, a surge of migrants increases the opportunities for child traffickers to smuggle at-risk children into the United States, and poses an existential threat to our border communities. President Biden, Chuck Schumer and Patty Murray should be focusing on securing our border and fixing our immigration system - not creating yet another new crisis for which they have no solution.
