Smiley Reconfirms Participation in Washington State Debate Coalition Debates, Asks Organization to Enter Into Broadcasting Discussions with CNN

23 Days After Initial Debate Proposal, Smiley Asks Why "Senate Democrats' Top Scaremonger" is "Scared of Debating"

Pasco, WA - Veterans advocate and U.S. Senate candidate Tiffany Smiley today reconfirmed with the Seattle City Club’s Washington State Debate Coalition (WSDC) her participation in two debates they will host in October. The Smiley for Washington campaign also encouraged WSDC to enter into discussions with CNN, who has expressed interest in broadcasting and moderating a debate in Washington State.

This comes 23 days after Smiley’s initial acceptance and subsequent confirmations to participate in four debates, to which 30-year incumbent Senator Patty Murray has confirmed her participation in none. Murray also refused to participate in a joint editorial board interview with Smiley last week.

“It’s ironic for Patty Murray - who has spent 30 years in the other Washington being the Senate Democrats’ top scaremonger - to be scared of debating me,” Smiley said. “She has been more focused on attacking political opponents than achieving results for Washington State and should have to answer for it on the debate stage with me.”

KTTH’s Jason Rantz commented on Murray’s debate cowardice earlier this week:

“Her lack of experience in tough interviews is … why Murray is still refusing to commit to a debate schedule with Smiley. The more people who hear from Smiley, the better she does. Murray knows that and she’s stalling in committing to a debate schedule. In the meantime, her campaign sends statements to media transcribers claiming she’s agreed to debate. She has? Apparently, she won’t tell us when those debates will occur. They must be secret debates.”

Thus far, the location and dates for debates Smiley has accepted an invitation to are:

Tri-Cities Region: Week of September 26 – Sponsored by the Tri-City Regional Chamber of Commerce

Washington State University: Friday, October 7 – Sponsored by the Seattle City Club’s Washington State Debate Coalition

Gonzaga University: Thursday, October 13 (Requested) – Sponsored by League of Women Voters of Washington Education Fund and The Spokesman-Review, Aired by KSPS

Seattle University: Tuesday, October 25 – Sponsored by the Seattle City Club’s Washington State Debate Coalition

Smiley may consider other debate opportunities beyond what has been accepted and proposed.
