Tiffany Smiley Visits SODO Encampment in Seattle

Veterans Advocate Visits Site of Proposed Megaplex, Assists with Cleanup Efforts, Listens to Residents

Seattle, WA – Last week, Tiffany Smiley joined We Heart Seattle as a volunteer to help with an encampment cleanup at the SODO camp, just blocks from CenturyLink Field. In addition to assisting cleanup efforts, Tiffany spoke with residents as well as We Heart Seattle founder Andrea Suarez and learned about the impacts of Seattle’s harm reduction programs and Andrea’s experiences working with Seattle’s homeless communities over the past several years. The team cleared more than 3,000 pounds of debris from the encampment.

The few hours I spent at the SODO camp were sobering and gut wrenching,” Smiley said, “As I picked through the needle-strewn debris my heart was breaking for the members of our community who are living in these conditions. It is so clear that current policies are not helping, but rather exacerbating this crisis and we need fresh solutions. This week I rolled out my Agenda for Recovery and Reform for Our Most Vulnerable as a starting point to addressing this complex issue. The status quo of just throwing more money at the problem is unacceptable and for the sake of our neighbors, businesses and communities, I will turn crisis into hope for the homeless and our communities.”

We Heart Seattle welcomes ALL organizations to participate in their volunteer led litter picks. They invite all leaders to join them to provide waste management as a form of harm reduction.
